Dear Lola,

You will turn two in exactly one week. As I type this you are asleep in my arms. You have a cold and although you tried to nap in your own bed, you found comfort, your eyes grew heavy, and you fell asleep in my arms.

With your birthday fast approaching, my heart & mind race a little faster with the anticipation of having a two year old. I have found myself more aware of every time  you say “I want a cuddle from mama”. Words you whisper, shout, laugh & sometimes cry many times throughout the day, and for this I am very grateful.

Physical touch has always been your thing. From as young as 6 months you would reach out for a cuddle from all those you held dear, as well as complete strangers we’d pass by. Your little friends, cousins, and kids at the park would be in your arms before they saw you coming.  You have always just loved to cuddle.

On the other hand, the amount of times you have fallen asleep in my arms, I could possibly count on two hands. These few times being in your first few weeks of life & on plane trips, but that’s about it. I guess you could say you love your bed as much as you love giving cuddles.

So while I may have gotten a bit teary and sentimental over the last few days about my baby turning two, right now, as you sleep on me soundly, well all I can say is, that you’ve always known exactly what your mama needs…

Dear Lola,

I have been taking a few photos in black and white lately. Because, 1) Sometimes papa turns the camera setting to black and white & I don't notice until I look back at the photos, and 2) I get a rather comforting, nostalgic feeling when peeping at a colourless world. Everything becomes quiet & still... which is pretty much the opposite of what it is like around here most of the time!

Dear Lola,

That moment when all you want to do is freeze time & stay right there forever. We have been having a lot of those moments lately.
Today it was before nap time.

As I tuck you in you say "I love you my sunshine"... and oh how I love you.

In other news, we just got back from the eye doctor who confirmed that you have perfect vision. You had to identify a series of pictures & didn't miss a beat- even going above & beyond. When shown a picture of a hand you said "that's a hand for finger painting!" - a picture of a teapot was greeted with "that's a teapot for a cuppa tea!". And you responded to a picture of a boat with people on it with- "that's a sailing boat... hello friends!" you shouted as you waved at the picture. But you got most excited over a picture of flowers - "That's Oma's flowers, water them, oh, oh butterfly!"
You made the Doctor giggle so much she sent you on your way with a balloon and lolly pop. What a lucky girl you are!

ps - please note our first visit to the the eye doctor a week earlier did not have such a happy ending. You were having trouble with a bowel movement you poor thing, & there were tears. Lots & lots of tears... and lots & lots of you repeating "I'm trying!" Needless to say this visit was a vast improvement!
